Unusual Textual Portrait Lithograph of Queen Victoria's Life Events. This very unusual image is made up of lines of text describing key events in the life of Queen Victoria. A picture and history lesson all in one. It took 4 years and 7 months to complete and consists of 173,000 words. The picture was published to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. A perfect demonstration that the technique of lithography can reproduce text. The story begins in the top left hand corner of Queen Victoria's hair, before the bonnet. Frame size: 94.5 x 71 cms Image size: 88 x 64 cms Condition. Good except a little staining to the top left edge and bottom right edge but well away from the image.

Inscribed to the bottom of the image 'A representation of the Ships "Amelia Wilson" & "Castor" off the Island of Bouro, with their Boats & Crew in the various process of Fishing, showing the manner the Spermaceti Whales are caught, also the mode of cutting them into the Ship & Boiling the Oil upon Deck. This plate is most respectfully Dedicated to Ph. Skelton, Andw. Stirton, Wm. & Nichols Esqrs, Owners of the said Ships by their most obedient humble Servant W.J. Huggins'.The overall condition is excellent, with no noticeable issues.Dimensions are as follows.Height 57cmWidth 74cmNote: 'Herman Melville, author of Moby-Dick (1851), judged William John Huggins to be one of very few artists able to portray a whale convincingly. Melville advised that "the only mode in which you can derive even a tolerable idea of his living contour, is by going a whaling yourself; but by so doing, you run no small risk of being eternally stove and sunk by him". Huggins, after several years at sea with the East India Company, established himself in London as a "Marine Painter, Printseller & Publisher [...] Merchants & Captains Supplied on Reasonable Terms".

Barry builds up each composition in layers to give a remarkable, almost ethereal feeling of depth and intensity and that connects with the emotions of the viewer. Effective juxtaposition of differing shades defines each scene to stunning effect, especially when the light falls on to the heavy layer of paint which in turn scatters the light in many directions. Barry continues to develop his style and technique, and has become one of the UK's most enduringly successful artists. "I consider my current work of landscapes and seascapes to be deceptively minimal and hope that the more one looks and analyses the picture the more one will see."

Condition: Excellent, no issues Artists Resale Rights may apply Provenance: Grapevine Gallery, Burnham Market, Norfolk NOTE: One of the country’s finest contemporary watercolourists, Gerard Stamp’s paintings are in the Royal Collection and Norwich Castle as well as a number of private collections, including those of Dame Judi Dench and the Duke of Bedford. Gerard Stamp grew up in Norfolk, going to school in the shadow of Norwich Cathedral. Here he developed a passion for drawing and painting – and in particular Norfolk and mediaeval architecture. After Art College he followed a career in London’s design and advertising industry before focusing full time on painting in 2002. From his first solo exhibition at the Grapevine Gallery in Norwich in 2005, his work quickly attracted national attention and a year later he held his first London exhibition, with Grapevine in Cork Street. Six more solo exhibitions followed, including Marshscape, a series of large studies featuring the Norfolk coast, and Mediaeval, a celebration of church architecture. In 2009 he held an exhibition at Bonhams, New Bond Street, London. Entitled Twelve Churches, it marked The Churches Conservation Trust’s Fortieth Anniversary. In 2010 his life came full circle when he was invited to stage the inaugural exhibition for the Royal opening of the Hostry, a new Exhibition and Visitor Centre at Norwich Cathedral where he was delighted to be asked to present Her Majesty the Queen with a painting to celebrate the occasion. Subsequent exhibitions including Spirits in Stone with Grapevine in London in 2012, Conquest at Norwich Castle Art Gallery. More exhibitions with Grapevine including At the Still Point in Exeter Cathedral in 2014 and Isle of Light in Ely Cathedral, have helped cement Stamp’s reputation.
